Emergency Department
The Hardin Medical Center Emergency Department provides around-the-clock care for our patients. Fully equipped with advanced technologies, our physicians, nurses, and support staff is poised for rapid response at all levels of emergency management—from assessments through trauma, acute and critical care.
Laboratory and Radiology Services are located on-site. In addition to providing referrals for follow-ups, we can suggest urgent care services for individuals with non-emergency conditions.
HMC is also a fully accredited Chest Pain Center which means the entire facility works together to provide the best possible care for the chest pain patient. From the 9-1-1 call that someone is having a heart attack – to the patient's discharge after a heart attack – to cardiac intervention. Protocols are in place that may help save the lives of cardiac patients every day.
Accredited Chest Pain Center
Seconds count when you are having a heart attack. It can mean life or death. It's important that you entrust your care with the skilled hands of the Hardin Medical Center staff and our Accredited Chest Pain Center.
Being an Accredited Chest Pain Center means Hardin Medical Center meets or exceeds national standards in cardiac care. Patients are quickly, accurately, and safely treated using the latest technology shown to improve outcomes of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
As an accredited Chest Pain Center, the care of the patient with chest pain and signs and symptoms of a possible acute coronary syndrome (a heart attack) begins the moment the patient arrives at the Hardin Medical Center Emergency Department or the moment the emergency personnel is summoned to the patient's home. This high level of care is extremely important, especially since we are in a rural setting.
The protocols our medical personnel follow can and do save lives.
Stroke Care
Hardin Medical Center collaborates with TriStar Health to provide 24/7 telemedicine stroke care. HMC ER physicians position the telemedicine robot at a patient's bedside and connect via the Internet to a TriStar Health neurologist specializing in stroke care. The robot provides two-way audio and video communication and many remote presence devices, such as an electronic stethoscope. HMC Emergency Department Stroke Care is available 24 hours a day/seven days a week.
Immediate access to a TriStar Health neurologist means patients may be eligible to receive time-critical medications such as tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), which can save brain function and reduce disability, and reduce or eliminate long-term stroke impacts. When it comes to a stroke, time is brain—minutes and seconds matter. Stroke Telemedicine is helping stroke patients earlier when treatment is so critical.
Payment Information
You will receive a separate bill for any services rendered by the attending physician in the emergency department from Schumacher Group.
Please get in touch with the physician's billing office if you have questions regarding your attending physician's billing statement.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac Rehab is a professionally supervised, customized program of exercise, education, and counseling designed to help one recover from a heart-related illness or disease.
Cardiac Rehab aims to help one regain strength, prevent a condition from worsening and reduce the risk of future heart problems.
Cardiac Rehab is often divided into phases that involve monitored exercise, nutritional counseling, emotional support, and support and education about lifestyle changes to reduce your risks of heart problems. The goals of cardiac Rehab are to help you regain strength, prevent your condition from worsening and reduce your risk of future heart problems.
The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology recommend Cardiac Rehab programs.
Why Cardiac Rehab?
Cardiac Rehab is an option for people of all ages and with many forms of heart disease. In particular, you may benefit from cardiac Rehab if your medical history includes the following:
-
Heart attack
-
Coronary artery disease
-
Heart failure
-
Peripheral arterial disease
-
Chest pain (angina)
-
Cardiomyopathy
-
Certain congenital heart diseases
-
Coronary artery bypass surgery
-
Angioplasty and stents
-
Heart transplant
-
Heart valve replacements
Don't let older age hold you back from joining a Cardiac Rehab program. Even if you're older than 65, you're likely to benefit from cardiac Rehab.
Risks
Cardiac Rehab isn't appropriate for everyone who's had heart disease. Your healthcare team will evaluate your health to ensure you're ready to start a cardiac Rehab program.
Rarely do some people suffer injuries, such as strained muscles, sprains, or broken bones, while exercising as a part of cardiac Rehab. Your healthcare team will carefully monitor you while you exercise to lower this risk and teach you how to avoid injuries when exercising on your own.
Preparation for Cardiac Rehab
Ask your doctor about joining a Cardiac Rehab program if you've had a heart attack, heart surgery, or another heart condition. Insurance and Medicare often cover the costs of cardiac Rehab.
What to expect at Cardiac Rehab
During Cardiac Rehab
Cardiac Rehab often begins while you're still in the hospital and continues with monitored programs in an outpatient setting until home-based maintenance programs can be safely followed.
The first stages of most cardiac Rehab programs last about three to six months. You may work with cardiologists, nurse educators, dietitians, exercise rehab specialists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists during that time.
Cardiac Rehab has four main parts:
Medical evaluation. Initial and ongoing assessment helps your healthcare team check your physical abilities, medical limitations, and other conditions you may have and keep track of your progress over time. Your healthcare team looks at your risk factors for heart disease such as stroke or high blood pressure. This helps your team tailor a cardiac Rehab program to your situation, ensuring it's safe and effective.
Physical activity. Cardiac Rehab improves cardiovascular fitness through walking, cycling, rowing, jogging, and other endurance activities. You may also do strength training (lifting weights, for example) to increase your muscular fitness.
Don't worry if you've never exercised before. Your cardiac Rehab team will make sure the program moves at a comfortable pace and is safe for you, but in general, you should exercise three to five times a week. You'll be taught proper exercise techniques, such as warming up and stretching.
Lifestyle education. Guidance about diet and nutrition helps you shed excess weight and learn to make healthier food choices to reduce fat, sodium, and cholesterol intake. You receive support and education on making lifestyle changes and breaking unhealthy habits like smoking. You also learn how to manage pain or fatigue you may have. Cardiac Rehab also gives you ample opportunity to ask questions about such issues as sexual activity. Finally, you must closely follow your doctor's advice on medications.
Support. Adjusting to a serious health problem often takes time. You may feel depressed or anxious, lose touch with your social support system, or have to stop working for several weeks. If you get depressed, don't ignore it because depression can make your cardiac rehab program more complex and impact your relationships and other areas of your life and health. Counseling will help you learn healthy ways to cope with depression and other feelings, and your doctor may also suggest medications such as antidepressants. Vocational or occupational therapy will teach you new skills to help you return to work.
Although starting a cardiac Rehab program may be challenging when you're not feeling well, you'll benefit in the long run. Cardiac Rehab can guide you through fear and anxiety as you return to an active lifestyle, with more motivation and energy to do the things you enjoy.
Cardiac Rehab helps you rebuild your life, both physically and emotionally. As you get stronger and learn how to manage your condition, you'll likely return to a normal routine, along with your new diet and exercise habits. It's important to know that your chances of having a successful cardiac rehab program rest mainly with you; the more dedicated you are to following your program's recommendations, the better you'll do.
After Cardiac Rehab
After your initial cardiac Rehab program ends, you'll need to continue the diet and exercise habits you learn during cardiac Rehab for the rest of your life to maintain its heart health benefits.
Results
Cardiac Rehab is a long-term maintenance program — something to follow for the rest of your life. After about 12 weeks, you probably will have developed your exercise routine at home or a local gym. You may also continue to exercise at a cardiac rehab center. You may remain under medical supervision during this time, particularly if you have health concerns. Education about nutrition, lifestyle, and weight loss may continue, as well as counseling. For best success, ensure your exercise and lifestyle practices become lifelong habits.
Over the long term, you gain strength, learn heart-healthy behaviors, improve your diet, cut bad habits like smoking, and learn how to cope with heart disease. You'll also decrease your risk of coronary artery disease and other heart conditions.
One of the most valuable benefits of cardiac Rehab is often an improvement in your overall quality of life. If you stick with your cardiac rehab program, you're likely to come out of your cardiac Rehab program feeling better than before.
Benefits of our Cardiac Rehab Program
Regular physical activity helps your heart and the rest of your body get stronger and work better. Physical activity improves your energy level and lifts your spirits. It also reduces your chances of future heart problems, including heart attacks.
Counseling and education can help you quit smoking, eat right, lose weight, and lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Counseling may also help you learn to manage stress and feel better about your health.
You have the advice and close supervision of healthcare professionals to help you improve your health and lower your risk of future problems. These professionals can also communicate with your primary care doctor or cardiologist.

New Vision Withdrawal Management
New Vision Withdrawal Management is an inpatient medical stabilization service for adults with drug, alcohol, and related health issues. New Vision is based inside Hardin Medical Center, so patients are under the care of a doctor, nurses, and other medical professionals 24/7 during their length of stay.
New Vision accepts adults who are currently experiencing active or impending withdrawal symptoms from certain drugs and provide a safe medical stabilization setting for those dependent on:
Alcohol
Opiates
Stimulants
Benzodiazepines
Prescription Drug Misuse
When a person decides to seek help, the initial phone call allows New Vision staff to complete a screening that takes less than 10 minutes and send the potential patient’s insurance info for verification. Once verified, admission can be scheduled. New Vision has no waitlist, and the goal is to get potential patients scheduled for admission on the same day or the following day. Admission is voluntary, and patients can self-refer.
When the potential patient arrives at the hospital for the scheduled admission, New Vision staff escort the patient to our office and begin the admission process. This process takes approximately an hour and includes a medical history, a physical, a complete laboratory workup, and a nursing assessment. This pre-screening process will enable the patient to be admitted alongside a personalized plan for treatment.
Once the pre-screening process is completed, the doctor reviews the information and makes the decision to admit the patient if it is deemed medically necessary. The patient, once admitted, is treated by nurses, physicians, and other medical staff. They are admitted to a “regular” hospital bed, and are treated as a patient, just as someone admitted for any other treatment would be.
On average, a normal length of stay is 3 midnights, but if the doctors deem appropriate, patients might stay an additional 1-2 midnights. Once admitted, New Vision staff work with the patient and provide advice and options on the patient’s next steps in their continuum of care. New Vision staff will execute a discharge plan and typically schedule follow-up appointments for the patient upon discharge.
New Vision is the “first step” for patients on the road to recovery. The hospital stay allows them to safely withdraw from the substance(s), and then proceed to further treatment in the recovery process.

HMC Sleep Lab
Sleep Evaluation and Testing
The first step in seeking help with a sleep complaint is to discuss it with your family physician. Not all complaints require a sleep study. Your sleep specialist will make that decision after a thorough evaluation. If a sleep study is required, you will be referred to the Hardin Medical Sleep Center to schedule your appointment. Testing will generally coincide with your normal sleep hours. The study is a non-invasive, painless procedure to determine if you have a sleep disorder.
Common Sleep Disorders:
Insomnia
The most common sleep-related problem, insomnia, is characterized by difficulty falling asleep and /or staying asleep. It can be a symptom of another sleep disorder or a condition itself. Depression and pain frequently aggravate this condition.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
OSA affects over 18 million Americans. Loud snoring and a blockage of the airway occur with this disorder, resulting in a drop in oxygen levels and arousal in sleep. These episodes can occur hundreds of times during sleep. Left untreated, OSA can increase the risk of weight gain, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and fatigue-related accident.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
This is a disagreeable feeling in the legs that can only be relieved by moving them. This most often occurs at night and can delay sleep onset.
During your sleep study, the sleep technologist will closely monitor and record your brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, breathing patterns, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and rhythm. Surgery at HMC
The Hardin Medical Center Surgery Department is staffed by experienced surgical nurses who assist your healthcare provider throughout your surgery. The department offers three well-equipped surgical suites, one endoscopic suite, and a dedicated surgical suite within the HMC Woman's Center.
Both Outpatient and Inpatient surgeries are available at HMC. Outpatient surgery is when a surgical procedure is done, then later the same day, you go home. Outpatient surgery is sometimes referred to as "short-stay," “same-day,” or ambulatory surgery.
Inpatient surgery is when you have surgery and must spend at least one night in the hospital, depending on the type of procedure that needs to be performed and your surgeon's instructions.
You may have visitors in the short-stay area before and after surgery. A surgical waiting area is provided.
